A calm-down routine for big-feelings moments
A calm-down cue is not a mute button. It is a familiar sequence that gives a child something concrete to do while a big feeling moves through.
Keep it short
Try three steps: name the feeling, choose a physical cue such as a sticker or comfort object, and take three slow breaths together.
Practice when calm
Children learn regulation routines more easily outside a meltdown. Rehearse before a first day, appointment or long car ride.
Respect the signal
If a child is overwhelmed, reduce demands and focus on safety. Ongoing distress deserves support from a pediatrician or school professional.
